Second Nature

It's time to discuss Second Nature, probably in more detail than you'd ever wanted to know.

Second Nature is a rather unusual part of Prisoners of Gravity and was introduced at the start of season two. It's purpose is to back up the claims that the show is a pirate broadcast. The downside is that it's so tailored to TVOntario that it doesn't sometimes make sense out of its original context. For example, it was out of place in the reruns on Space and Booktelevision.

The original idea for Second Nature is that it's supposed to be an actual nature show being aired by the station. This wouldn't have been unusual for TVOntario; nature documentaries make up a decent part of the station's schedule and are stereotypical of what could be seen by randomly flicking to the station in the middle of the night. Admittedly, the joke only really works once.

As far as I know, Second Nature isn't a parody of any specific show airing at that time. Enrico Gruen does bear a slight passing resemblance to how Canadian environmental activist David Suzuki looks now, but not back in 1990. In one season two episode, Enrico's mannerisms are patterned in part after Brian Linehan. Commander Rick makes a reference to the CBC program Morningside during a fight with Enrico in the same episode, possibly indirectly comparing Enrico to either Peter Gzowski or Shelagh Rogers. These are all Canadian talk show hosts from TV and radio and not connected to any nature shows.

Aside from Enrico, no other cast or crew from Second Nature are seen on-screen. Enrico has made comments to a crew member off-screen named "Wally". This could be a reference to Wally Teska, Prisoners of Gravity's production manager.

There are some slight differences in Second Nature between season two and three, which can be connected to the visual overhaul that the series on a whole got at the same time. The opening was cleaned up and the filming locations for the show clips change. Most, if not all, of the clips in season two are filmed in a very simple studio. The clips from the later seasons are filmed outdoors in midtown Toronto, around the intersection of Yonge and Eglinton. It just so happens that this is where TVOntario is located. Here's some examples of the filming locations. The photographs were taken during December 2008 and the area has been built up since the show's original run. Also, there's snow.

A screencap of the Second Nature clip included in the episode Sandman. Sorry about the quality of the image.

This is was filmed on the parking lot of Canada Square. The parking lot is located in the back, on top of the new (2003) bus depot for Eglinton station.

I don't remember which episode this is from, but I believe that it's from the third season.

This was filmed in the front of Canada Square, just outside of the lower offices of TVOntario. This is a lot more built up now - note that the park on the right side of the street has been replaced with a condo.
