They're Lean, Mean and a Marketing Dream... Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Henry Mietkiewicz, Toronto Star
"The remarkable thing is how well the characters can be adapted to different audiences without losing their basic appeal," says Mark Askwith, senior story editor for Prisoners of Gravity, the TVOntario series about comics.
Askwith noted that Mirage continues to issue a fairly sophisticated comic book aimed mainly at a high school and university comic.
But, he says, the characters are so popular with children that the Archie Comics' company is publishing another comic book with simpler drawings, brighter colours and funnier stories for a juvenile audience.
An added advantage, Askwith says, is that the Turtles were originally developed as genuine characters and not as a contrived excuse to grind out toys like GI Joe or Masters of the Universe.
